I just did some counting on my fingers and turns out that I’ve been living for almost 30 years, less than half an hour from New York City. I know, time flies. No, it races. I remember my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Keener, standing out on the playground at recess, begging me to be patient about time.
“Don’t rush away your childhood.”
Of course I thought he was crazy. I was so ready then to be in high school with the older kids but I didn’t want to leave his classroom either. He ran the only room that felt like home to me as I came to the end of my elementary career. Finally, a teacher I could love and I was impatient to see what life was like where the big kids lived.
But I digress. This Slice is supposed to be about my love for a life well lived, close to New York City and I yet do understand what Mr. Keener was warning me against. I am listening now, that’s for sure, as I am just about to celebrate year 65 and apply for my Medicare and Social Security cards. Can you believe that?
Again, I digress.
What I want this Slice to be about is my love for the city that I can almost touch from my condo and from Tuvia’s home in Paramus.
On Sunday, we left for a family celebration brunch at 9:15 and we were parked and standing in front of the Park hotel to join my brother, family and friends by 10:05. Of course NYC is not cheap and there was no sunshine but as usual the streets were filled with people and their energy.
I left my small town in 1986 and yes, I can come back and feel good there, but home is here, close to the pulse of NYC, FOREVER!
I think New York City deserves more of my slicing time.
Lovely to hear all about some of your past, Bonnie & your continuing love of NYC. The time, the time-so fast!
You said it Linda
I live, and was born and raised, in San Francisco and I feel the same way. Even though I don’t go out often these days (three kids and a career sure cut into the scene!) I love that I can eat at fabulous restaurants or see a play (not NYC, but still), or take a walk with the Golden Gate Bridge in view any weekend.
San Fran, now you live in a gem too 🙂
Yeah baby, New York New York – no place like it. I haven’t been in for a week and I am having withdrawl symptoms. I’ll have to find an excuse! Looks like a happy lunch.
🙂
Anxious to read more posts about NYC!
We live in a small town. I do love it, but the big city beckons. We usually find a way to vacation in big cities. I’d love to hear more about your life near NYC.
I can’t say I loved small town living after age 16 but the NYC suburbs, I hope I never move!
Bonnie, I want you to show me this city. How many days would I need to get a taste (and be able to afford)? Is your tour guide service available at the end of August? I’m turning into a new decade, so I need to celebrate. We need to chat. 🙂
The NYC Welcome Wagon is open for business 🙂
My aunt was a nurse in King’s County Hospital for years. A a kid I would go visit her for a week every summer. I credit her with my love of Broadway and the theater since we always went to at least two shows while I was visiting. I still go back when I can. In fact, I have tickets for two shows this summer. Can’t wait to get back.
It maybe hot in NYC but always exciting!
Yes, the pulse of NYC is irresistible, but I’m always happy to come home to my small town.
Me too!!!
Rushing our lives…we all did that when we were young, didn’t we? And now, we just want to slow the days and spend more time doing this joyful life. Glad you are still writing, wherever it may be.
