I made it through the night more or less sleeping. Finally, it’s 5 and the early morning news welcomes the day, a hot Labor Day begins.
There was a nice balance to yesterday. Sophia arrived at 9 to make magic, cleaning for 3 hours, filling the house with those wonderful fresh aromas. All shiva crumbs are gone. Even the refrigerator is spotless.
I was dressed for the gym but I never got there, not yet. Instead I read and thought about grief with the inspiration of Joan Didion in her The Year of Magical Thinking as she dealt with the deaths of both her husband and daughter. I moved from the living room couch to a porch chair and back again, with delicious interruptions from Rick, Ami and Mia coming from Israel.
Sophia was done on time as usual and I changed out of my clean workout clothes for something more NYC. No traffic on Labor Day Sunday and I was off to spend the rest of the day with Marie France and Don- a movie and dinner.
Arriving early, Don and MF took time to share new art purchases from the their recent trip to Viet Nam. I don’t think I’ll get there but their new pieces are gorgeous. I love Don’s enthusiasm for art.
We had tickets for Lilly Tomlin’s new movie, Grandma and took a long, leisurely walk from their place to the small Lincoln Plaza theater, passing Lincoln Center. Yes, it was hard not to feel your absence as I glanced over the see the fountain without water as they begin their massive renovation that you will never enjoy. I wonder if I will be able to return there without you.
But I kept moving, catching up as MF and Don walked energetically. A perfect day to be in NYC. Sunshine, small crowds.
The movie was short and yes, I napped a bit even with MF on one side nudging me and Don on the other rubbing my back. I needed the sleep more and as you might guess, I saw enough to know you would have HATED it and it was just okay. Lilly was fun to watch by the plot conflicts were left undeveloped.
Probably the best part of the day was just ahead of us as we walked back to West End Ave, the slow way, around the park, down to the river. GLORIOUS!!!!
Dinner was already prepared and waiting for us. Drinks upstairs on the balcony- first time for me and then dinner back down on their terrace.
Sweet start to Labor Day, reading as the house was made clean again and NYC for energy, for great friends, and an easy ride in and out and I was back home without you to share it.
